Today on splodge...

Life is a highway

Ever stopped to think where you are going? Ok, so you jump in the car and drive somewhere, and then you probably drive home again. If you don't drive home again, you make a new home somewhere on the road. Life is, apparently, like a highway, taking you from birth to death and all points in between and just like any road it has stops and starts and interesting things to see and do and experience. It also has potholes and ruts and road works along a journey sometimes paved with smooth highway, populated areas, isolation and the occasional lay by.

Lay by. A rest area along the journey.

Whenever we drive to Thames, we usually stop in the Athenree Gorge and let Nushie out for a piddle. She tends to dribble on the seat and gets all huffy and puffy if she doesn't get a toilet stop. There is a neat big lay by in the gorge that has big, old palm trees and picnic tables, alongside a stream and right off the road itself. Very picturesque, it is too and some of you guys will know it well. But no matter how nice it is, it's only a temporary stop on the way to (or from) somewhere else. It's a resting place, or a fill up your radiator place, a toilet stop or somewhere to stretch your legs before continuing on to somewhere that actually matters, has security, permanence and warmth. Home.

A lay by is a stopgap and only serves to be used at will, possibly with gratitude, and then move on.

I wonder sometimes, as ya do, why some people's lives are a lay by and some are a destination, and therefore the same applies to people - why some people are a complete destination for someone else, yet others are just a lay by for people on their way to, or from, someone else.
